My product! On Etsy's Frontpage! Yes!

Quiet frankly I've never really got the idea about these Etsy Treasuries. But everbody tells you to participate for the fun and the promo. So I thaught I'll give it a try, made some Treasuries and convoed the participating Etsy sellers afterwords. In return some of them featured one of my creations.

"Here in Middle Europe summer has skipped us this year. It's already September, no way it's becoming summerly now. So where is summer actually? Using online weather reports and Etsy's Shop Local I found it at these Etsy sellers in: Turkey, Greece, Israel, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Mallorca and the south of France."

On September 2nd I posted a Treasury called "O summer where art thou?". I described the idea behind it a follows:
"Here in Middle Europe summer has skipped us this year. It's already September, no way it's becoming summerly now. So where is summer actually? Using online weather reports and Etsy's Shop Local I found it at these Etsy sellers in: Turkey, Greece, Israel, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Mallorca and the south of France."

Already the first picture top left of Duende from Israel matched perfectly.
On September 4th Duende herself posted a Treasury called "Less is more" feauring my oroduct in prominent place top left.

So this morning I was informed by the Statsy Featorator:

Hi there,
I have some good news for you: zafran was featured on Etsy's front page,
with the "Printed Abstract Unisex One Size Hip Belt CACTUS"! Hooray!
You can see a copy of this front-page treasury here:
http://statsy.org/featurator_view.php?date=2010-09-06+02%3A00 :-)

Now I finally got the idea about these Treasuries!

It's a dirty job

Today I’ll introduce you to the dirty part of my small business. You know, it’s not all about taking pretty floral pictures and creating nice designs. Sometimes I’m in mud up to my ellbows. Once or twice a year I put on the boiler suit and turn into a mechanic. Time for cleaning and technical service. The core of my whole working process, my baby, is my sublimation printer. It needs extra care and attendance. Namely whenever it doesn’t match my time schedule.

Yesterday, when doing some test prints of my latest hip belt designs, all the sudden it made „Pop!“ and a ink filled outlet tube loosened at its connection. The wall, the display case surface, the back of the printer, the shelf above: all covered with black ink. Unmistakable hint: something not quite ok. Because of my personal summer break I hadn’t have been printing much in the past weeks. So ink leavings had dried in the tube, which inevitably leeds to plugging. After the first printing cycle the offcut ink got constantly pumped into the tube, but couldn’t drain. So pressure goes p, the ink looks for some way out and the weekest spot backs down: here you go, big mess and a few hours of extra work.

Now keep calm and carry on systematically. First checked if the connection is plugged. Removed it with slippery fingers full of ink and braught it over to the next sink. Close the outlet! If it’s gone, it’s gone and you cant’s get it at any hardware store, you need to know somebody that knows somebody. Rinsed it with water using my most important tool: the shot (it’s always nearby the printer). Well, the connection wasn’t the problem. It must have been the tube. So I rinsed that one using the shot again and a lot of dark tiny bits were washed out: cristiallized ink.

Now that I had found the drive I started checking print heads and dumpers. I had disliked the print image anyway, it was much too streaky. So I removed the guide rail for lifting the case and cleaning the print heads from underneath. Then I pulled the dumpers carefully. Carefully! If the membrane gets hurt, the ink drains and the dumper’s kaputt. Again there’s the shot, my favourite tool. I use it to squeeze cleaning solution through from above through the print heads to rinse them. Looks good. So I reconnect the tube with the connection, fix the guide rail, put back the dumpers, clean the sink, scrub my hands (which turns to be hopeless) and print a test image. Ohhh no: it’s still streaky! The cyan print head has four plugged nozzles. Maybe, if I let drain a bit more cleaning solution and let soak over night…

Appendix: Didn't work. Again I'm in mud up to my ellbows.

Market booth mood board

Exactly one month until the 2nd Designmarkt! One of my brain hemisphere is dutifully working on the To-Do-List capturing boring stuff like business cards, power supply, change etc. The other hemisphere is dreaming about interior design, ever changing the colors and appearance of the market booth. And is never satisfied. On Design Sponge I stumbled upon this perfect mood board today: this room in Emily Hensons house is the model for my booth design now. I want it to be that clean, playful and bold!

Mr. Andreas und sein Bestiarium. Mr. Andreas and his bestiary

Even on vacation my good eye never sleeps. I could find motives that I would never picture at home - and at the same time whitness stories good enough for several blogposts.
Story no. 1 is about Mr. Andreas and his bestiary. It goes a little something like this:

About three kilometers away from Limnionas/ Samos the end of the world begins. And there's a taverne at the end of the world. You can't miss it if you keep following the rocky road along the shore. There is just no other way.

Ausserdem wurde nicht auf Beschilderung verzichtet.
Besides they didn't save up on signs.

Wiederum beschildert.
After an hour at moust including breaks for taking photos you'll reach the end of the world. A sign will tell you so.

There you'll meet the owners Andreas and Cilly that run this completely self-sustaining taverne.
You will be fed and entertained by their wonderful food and tellings. It might even happen, that the subject "wild beasts of the area" comes up which will unevitably brings you to three bottles filled with ethanol and Mr. Andreas bestiary. One bottle contains a huge grasshopper, one contains a viper and one contains several dozens of scorpions. Every night before sleep Andreas takes a tong and searches the upper flour for scorpions. He fetches them with the tong and kills them with ethanol before putting them into bottles.

I was especially struck by the scorpions. Indeed, I have a feeling like my collection of belts will soon be joined by a new one called "scorpio". I've already made some sketches.

Armlange Stulpen: Fotos aufpolieren Arm Spats/Arm Warmers: Revamping my pictures

Oh, how much I'd love to always have such an empty space with white walls for my shootings! Too bad this is a non-recurring opporunity. My boyfriend gets a new room mate. They will switch rooms and the former living room had to be cleaned out for renovation. That was the chance to restage my collection of arm spats. And even the sun was shining!

Of course I'm extremly grateful that my boyfriend took the time for this shooting. Though it's not always easy working with him really not.

But I'm happy with the result.

work in progress: lace and liqid latex

When searching the internet for something I stumbled upon a tutorial on liquid latex. I cautiously ordered one bottle in black and started experimenting by coating various materials. Most of the experiments went straight to the trash can. Only latex coated lace was approved. I'm not really a big fan of black so I consequently ordered seven bottles latex in colours coral, turquiose, bold green, lemon, sky blue and lilac.

I habe erst mal alle Farben einzeln ausprobiert.

I started trying out every single colour as you can see above. Only green I have not tested yet. On the left you see the orignal lace. Pretty plane. Had to relief it from it's boring beige life. And how much brighter it looks after my colour therapy!

I just can't seem to work with one colour only, it' impossible! So I consequently started experimenting with colour gradients. Best way to do this is by using a wet-in-wet technique.
By the way: liquid latex contains ammonia. I recommend wearing a dust mask!

Whoopie! I'm the Friday Crafter Feature on Crafty MissusD

Kathleen Dalseno von Crafty MissusD stellt meine Arbeit und mich heute vor: mit welchen Techniken ich arbeite, wie ich dazu kam, was mich inspiriert und was mir gefällt. Alles in einem handlichen Interview. Ich hoffe, ich treffe sie eines Tages. Ich glaube wir haben einen ähnlichen Humor. Ihre gehäkelten See Slugs lassen mich das vermuten.

Kathleen Dalseno of Crafty MissusD is introcuing me and my work today: the techniques I work with, how I came to work with them, what inspires me and what I like. Everything in this handy interview. I really hope we meet in person one day. I believe we have a similar kind of humor. At least her crocheted see slugs make me think we do.

work in progress: "Cuckoo" and "LilliesAmaryllis"

Linear distance between my sewing machine and my computer is 71,5 cm. So it's no thing giving ya'll a sneak preview on my work in progress. Last week I finished two new designs for my collection of gauntlets, printed and transferred them onto fabric. Today I'm attaching some paspoille trimming onto the front selvedges. Next step will be the seams.

Once this style is finished it's going to be named "Cuckoo", because it features a flower called "Kuckuckslichtnelke" in german. It's Ragged Robin in english.

One tiger lily, one white lily and one amaryllis will become "LilliesAmaryllis", once they've finished.

"Queen of fucking everything"

Ich finde einfach keine "Queen of fucking everything".

Mobile Phone Case "BeetleGreen": on Beetles and Surrealism

This Mobile Phone Case is actually a hidden image puzzle:
find the grim looking man wearing a mustache!
But to find it you need a certain sense for surrealism.

You need to turn the case upside down.

Jetzt musst Du näher rangehen.
Now you have to ge a little closer.

a) kein Surrealist oder
b) weitsichtig.

If you still can't seem to figure it out, then you're
a) no surrealist or
b) long-sighted.
Not your fault, you can't help it. Here's the answer:

It's only one week that I've discovered
meylah, a blog distributing business ideas to creative folks. In this short perios of time they twice provided me with helpful tips. In my last blogpost I reported about this online photo editing toy called picnik which I used straight adead. This time 'm really happy about this nice tutorial on packaging.

So far I've used tissue paper to wrap around my goods. But this packaging looks so much better plus it protects the item during transport.

Work in progress: spring collection 2010

Toller Tag heute!

What a great day today! I could finally realise the designs for my spring collection 2010 that I've been having on my mind for a while. And I printed them allready! What a flush of colours! Tomorrow I'll be sewing, this weekend I'll be taking pictures and next week I'll put them on DaWanda, Etsy and Guzuu.

I got such a kick, I took some fotos of my work in progress.

Toller Tag!

Finally
meylah's blog introduced me to this really cool photo editing toy called picnick that I instantly used for the pictures above. It is for free, just imagine. What a great day today!

Ich hab mein Logo nochmal renoviert! I re-renovated my logo!

Life has lately taught me that renovating an old logo is about the same as renovating an old house.

I put last weeks blogpost (
I renovated my logo!) on several forums for discussion. I could've as well told my relatives that I acquired a 400 years old hunting lodge up in the Vosges. The comments would have been equal:"Wow, awesome!", "Are you nuts, what's this all about?", "But honey, your new-built-three-bedroom-appartment was quiet nice though."

Also habe ich weiter gebastelt.

The majority indeed considered the old logo quiet allright. Only one fellow craftista got to the point: "'It looks like a box of viola drops." Thank you! I couldn't have found better words. So there's no way I'm gonna return to the old logo, but still the new one obviously isn't good enough. And I kept on working on it.

Zunächst aber nochmal die ganze Historie.
First of all here comes the whole history again.

Dieses Symbol ist die Basis. Es stellt eine Zafránblüte dar. Everything is based on this symbol. It's a zafránflower (Zafrán=Saffron)

Das alte Logo (die Schachtel Veilchenpastillen). The old logo (the box of viola drops).

Nie-mand!!! This is the renovated logo. Nobody but me noticed that it resembles to angelwings with an halo on top. No-bo-dy!!!

Here I adopted some encouragments from the forums and changed arrangement, scaling and font.

Wirklich. This is a completely different approach. Does anybody besides my boyfriend think this particular green looks like vomit? I'd love to hear some honest opinions. Really.

Here I just made some little variation on "Schnickschnack de Luxe".

Finding a really good name for your brand: phew, that´s a puzzle.

I chose „zafrán“ (saffron) then, because my brand should have something floral about it. After all I started with flowers to iron-on and my designs are still pretty bloomy. Besides – saffron is exclusive and expensive. „Perfect!“ I thought. The syntax is taken from the arab word „za'farān“. The add-on „Schnickschnack de Luxe“ followed later.

Autsch.

So, finding a name was difficult enough. But creating a fine logo was almost impossible. I failed, though. That's why I've been working witha logo I didn't really like for the past years. Others didn't either: „Looks kind of greenie.“, I was told a couple of times. And I even had to admit ! Ouch.

Last week I finally tackled to renovate my logo. The basic shape is a modified crocus, for saffron is taken from crocusses. I didn't want wo change this shape, because I like it. Especially when mirrored in many ways it creates new inspiring forms.

Another thing I was struggling with was: my headers and my logo were not consistent. Because I disliked my logo I designed something completely different as a shop- and blog header. But that's real bad, of course! No consistency- no recognition. Though I find my old headers beautiful, I am willing to sacrifice them on the altar of best-marketing-practice.

  • Sonst noch was?

What I really really need now is the input of you crafters:

  • Please critisize my new designs affect and appearance.

  • What about the proportions of the writing and the flowers?

  • Do you think logo and header are consistent with my products aesthetics?

  • Anything else?
