Pfau am Küchentisch. A Peacock at my kitchen table.

The beauty of my work is that looking for a motive means looking for an inspiration. At the same time that’s the hard part of my work, because my tools are not pen and paper but the camera. For shooting floral close-ups I need spare time, the right weather (no drowning clowds, no wind), the right kind of light, the right season, the right time of the day (the light might be better in the morning, but some flowers might still be at sleep) etc. On pretty rare occasions all of these things happen at the same time, so my inspiration safaris are pretty rare too.

But sometimes I don’t even have to get up from the kitchen table. Like a couple of months ago. The setting sun was beaming into the room making all the shades of my green and blue vase collection glow. And I noticed how nicely I had once arranged everything on that ledge. And I wondered when had I added this peacock feather. And I realised that I obviously had gotten totally routined in my own appartement, because I had been sitting across this moodboard every day without even seeing it.

How to turn Iris sibirica into a pair of veeery long arm spats.

Just look at this deep, velvet, delicious violet and the animal-print like pattern in the petals center. I was literally electrified when discovering this Iris sibirica on the cold and plain ground in march. It bloomed in yellow and a quite irritating somehow greyish blue at the stony hillside of the Merianpark Brüglingen

I took it's picture and later edited it by removing the background.

Afterwards I arranged them on the arm spats template.

It took me quite a long time experimenting with the background. Finally I decided to create the flower's outline. "Wild Iris" features a yellow colour gradient laying over the dark gradient.

So sehen die Drucktemplates aus.

These are the print templates.

"Dark Iris" features a contrasting coral red elastic paspoile at it's hem. For "Wild Iris" I chose one in colour lemon.

Creating a graphical printed unisex belt from a cactus.

Whenever I go hunting for floral or organic images for my textile designs, the Botanical Garden of the University of Basel is surely on my route.

From left to right you can see above the Kalthaus, the Viktoriahaus and the Sukkulentenhaus. The large building behind them is the library.

In the very right greenhouse, the Sukkulentenhaus, I took this image of a catus a while ago.

I took on detail and noticed the graphical order of the barbs.

Dann habe ich den Ausschnitt gespiegel...
Then I mirrored the detail...

...und weil's so schön geometrisch aussah, gleich nochmal.
...and because the result was so perfectly geometrical, I mirrored it once more.

Die Farben brauchten etwas mehr Intensität.
The colours needed a bit more intensity.

All was left to do was mirroring the details until...

...eine vernünftige Gürtellänge hatte.
... they made a useful length for a belt.

Creating an abstract printed unisex belt from red cabbage.

Textile designers have a different view on the world. Others don't even notice the things that are a deep source of inspiration to us. For example food. Especially raw vegetables.

Just how the bold blueish violet is meandering trough the white background!

Wenn man nun davon einen Ausschnitt nähme....
If I would took one detail....

....dann könnte ich diesen Ausschnitt spiegeln...
I could mirror this detail....

....und nochmal spiegeln...
....and mirror it again...

....and afterwords I could mirror it over and over and over again, until....

.....daraus ein Gürtel wird.

DancingHearts Iron-On Patches

Bleeding Heart also known as Venus's car, Dutchman's trousers, or lyre flower shows blossoms in white, white/ pink or pink and is native to Korea and the north and west of china. It prefers clear hilly deciduous forests up to an altitude of 2400 meters.

It also grows T-Shirts wether they are striped, black or of any other colour. Though they change their name to Dancing Hearts growing laid-back on the ground.

Mobile Phone Case "BeetleGreen": on Beetles and Surrealism

This Mobile Phone Case is actually a hidden image puzzle:
find the grim looking man wearing a mustache!
But to find it you need a certain sense for surrealism.

You need to turn the case upside down.

Jetzt musst Du näher rangehen.
Now you have to ge a little closer.

a) kein Surrealist oder
b) weitsichtig.

If you still can't seem to figure it out, then you're
a) no surrealist or
b) long-sighted.
Not your fault, you can't help it. Here's the answer:

Non, je ne regrette rien

"Non, je ne regrette rien" ist der erste Choker With A Message, den ich entwarf.

"Non, je ne regrette rien" is the first Choker With A Message that I designed.

This immortal song by Edith Piaf touches everybody. Some feel like it's words descripe exactly their attitude to life, others wish they had this attitude to life. It is one of these songs that have always been there, that everybody knows and that's in everbodys memory.

It is especially in my memory because years back a friend from school tried to impress me with this song. And he totally failed. We were going for a ride on his old Beetle and they were playing this song on the radio. He soulfully sang along. All man with poetic feelings, and still so sophisticated, trying to imitate Edith Piafs articulation and pronunciation. He choked on her accentuated Rrrr, he killed the engine, I choked on my laughter and soon afterwards our trip was over.

Non! Rien de rien ...
Non! Je ne regrette rien ...
Ni le bien qu'on m'a fait
Ni le mal tout ça m'est bien égal!

Non! Rien de rien ...
Non! Je ne regrette rien ...
C'est payé, balayé, oublié
Je me fous du passé!

Avec mes souvenirs
J'ai allumé le feu
Mes chagrins, mes plaisirs
Je n'ai plus besoin d'eux!

Balayés les amours
Avec leurs trémolos
Balayés pour toujours
Je repars à zéro ...

Non! Rien de rien ...
Non! Je ne regrette rien ...
Ni le bien, qu'on m'a fait
Ni le mal, tout ça m'est bien égal!

Non! Rien de rien ...
Non!

There's this picture by René Magritte "Ceci n'est pas une pipe". The pipe is painstainkingly drwan to appear so realistic. The picture says: do not confuse the picture with reality.

I came across it again a couple of weeks ago and it inspired me to try a similar play using my fotorealistic prints. These phonecases are the result of that process.

Cactusflower

Alles was mir fehlte waren Kakteenblüten.

It was in May that I had some designs on my mind involving cactusflowers. The only thing I was missing was cactusflowers. I simply couldn't seem to find any blooming cacti. None in the bontanical garden, nowhere in my neighbourhood or at my friends houses. So I decided to start a competition.

I was overwhelmed by the reaction. People sent links to familiar as well as unfamiliar foto communities. Some sent pictures or even CDs of their flowering cacti. My cry for help was even forwarded to
Ron Orp's newsletter here in Basel. That brought a lot of traffic to my blog, but unfortunately not a single foto that I could've used. They had either been taken from a wrong angle or in unfavourable light/ showing shadows/ unfocused.

Soon it became obvious that I had to take pictures myself. So I started searching again. And I did find something on the web. Where else? I found Mr. Roland Stuber.
Instructor, Photographer and President of the Swiss Cacti Foundation who has his own website. He was kind enough to let me take pictures from his collection of cacti.

Recht vielen Dank nochmal an Herrn Stuber!

And he took almost two hours of his time to explain a lot about cacti and tell about his journeys to their natural habitats. Before that I never had a cleas idea about the barb's function. Mr. Stuber explained that they do not only protect the plant against herbivores, but also net the morning mist from which the plant takes moisture. Besides that they work like a sunshade. Once again, thank you very much, Mr. Stuber.

Photoshop Till You Drop, Part II

With a little help of my friends konnte ich eine weitere digitale Figurine durch einen echten Menschen mit echtem Hals für meine echten Choker ersetzen. Little help ist natürlich masslos untertrieben.

With a little help of my friends I was able to substitute another sketched figurine by a real person with a real neck wearing my real choker. A little help is a bit beyond the point. My friend spent 2 hours on a Saturday night with me and so exhausted afterwards - she went straight home instead of giong out.
The shooting at night wasn't easy at all. As a semi-part-time-pro I do not have any suitable light sources at all. Well, that's what's Photoshop for!
I wanted to create a kind of cabaret setting with this picture.

I'm The One You Want

I'm constantly on the hunt for cool songphrases. Songs are my greatest Inspiration for designing my chokers. These words are taken from
"Sticks & Stones" by the fabolous Pierces. I discovered the band when I spent New Year 2008 in Berlin where I grabbed an issue of
siegessäule and read through the latest critiques on new bands and cd's. Right after returning home I listened to all their clips from "13 Tales of Love and Revenge" on YouTube and then I went downtown to purchase the cd. I instantly got hooked by this refrain and it was only natural to use it as a message on one of my chokers. Voilá!

Hey domino,
I am stopping you from falling
1-2-3 Don’t you dare go down
Hey waterfall,
Oh can you hear me calling?
3-2-1 don’t you dare touch the ground

I’m the one you want
I’m the one you want
I’m the one you want
I’m the one you want

Well, sticks and stones will break your bones
And leave you lying in the mud
But you get scared when we’re alone
Like I might suck your blood
Well I could tell you a witch’s spell
But it just might blow your top
Then you start to run just as I’m having fun
And it’s awfully hard to stop
Its awfully hard to stop

Sun in the sky,
I am stopping you from burning
All we need is stars and moon
Clock on the wall,
I will keep your hands from turning
Or this night will end too soon

I’m the one you want
I’m the one you want
I’m the one you want
I’m the one you want

Well, sticks and stones will break your bones
And leave you lying in the mud
But you get scared when we’re alone
Like I might suck your blood
And I could tell you a witch’s spell
But it just might blow your top
Then you start to run just as I’m having fun
And it’s awfully hard to stop
Its awfully hard to stop
It’s just too hard to stop

Ooooh
Hey lover boy,
Oh, now do you believe me?
That’s not all that I can do
Sit back down,
I’m afraid we won’t be leaving
Cant undo my spell on you

I’m the one you want
I’m the one you want
I’m the one you want
I’m the one you want
I’m the one you want
I’m the one you want
I’m the one you want
I’m the one you want

Well sticks and stones will break your bones
And leave you lying in the mud
But you get scared when we’re alone
Like I might suck your blood
And I could tell you a witch’s spell
But you just might blow your top
Then you start to run just as I’m having fun
And it’s awfully hard to stop

Well sticks and stones will break your bones
And leave you lying in the mud
But you get scared when we’re alone
Like I might suck your blood
And I could tell you a witch’s spell
But you just might blow your top
Then you start to run just as I’m having fun
And it’s awfully hard to stop
Its awfully hard to stop
It’s just too hard to stop
I don’t think I can stop
