It's a dirty job

Heute zeige ich Euch den schmutzigen Teil meines Kleingewerbes. Es ist nicht alles immer nur Blümchen fotografieren und Müsterchen basteln. Nein, ab und zu stecke ich bis zu den Ellenbogen im Sumpf. Ein bis zweimal im Jahr zieh ich den Blaumann an und werde zur Mechanikerin. Dann wird der Maschinenpark gereinigt und gewartet. Das Herzstück meines ganzen Prozesses, mein Baby, ist der Sublimationsdrucker. Er braucht besonders intensive Pflege und Aufmerksamkeit. Und zwar immer dann, wenn’s gerade gar nicht in den Zeitplan passt.

Today I’ll introduce you to the dirty part of my small business. You know, it’s not all about taking pretty floral pictures and creating nice designs. Sometimes I’m in mud up to my ellbows. Once or twice a year I put on the boiler suit and turn into a mechanic. Time for cleaning and technical service. The core of my whole working process, my baby, is my sublimation printer. It needs extra care and attendance. Namely whenever it doesn’t match my time schedule.

Gestern, beim Probedrucken der neuesten Gürteldesigns machte es plötzlich „Plopp!“ und an einer Kupplungsstelle löste sich ein tintengefülltes Abflaufschläuchlein. Die Wand, das Bildschirmgehäuse vom Computer, die Druckerrückseite, die Ablage darüber: alles voller schwarzer Tinte. Ganz klares Zeichen: jetzt ist irgendwas nicht mehr gut. In den vergangenen Wochen hatte ich Sommerpause und deshalb sehr wenig gedruckt. Dadurch trockneten die Tintenreste im Schlauch ein, was unweigerlich zu Verstopfungen führt. Beim ersten Drucken konnte dann die Resttinte, die von der Pumpe fleissig in den Schlauch gedrückt wird, nicht abfliessen: Druck baute sich auf, die Tinte suchte einen anderen Ausgang, der Schlauch gab an irgendeiner Schwachstelle nach: voilá, Riesensauerei und ein paar Stunden extra Arbeit.

Yesterday, when doing some test prints of my latest hip belt designs, all the sudden it made „Pop!“ and a ink filled outlet tube loosened at its connection. The wall, the display case surface, the back of the printer, the shelf above: all covered with black ink. Unmistakable hint: something not quite ok. Because of my personal summer break I hadn’t have been printing much in the past weeks. So ink leavings had dried in the tube, which inevitably leeds to plugging. After the first printing cycle the offcut ink got constantly pumped into the tube, but couldn’t drain. So pressure goes p, the ink looks for some way out and the weekest spot backs down: here you go, big mess and a few hours of extra work.

Jetzt nicht hektisch werden, sondern systematisch vorgehen! Erst überprüfen, ob die Kupplungsstelle verstopft ist. Kupplung rausoperieren und mit den glitschigen, tintenverschmierten Fingern zum nächsten Waschbecken transportieren. Ablauf zumachen! Wenn die weg ist, ist sie weg und die gibt’s nicht im Baumarkt, sondern nur über Beziehungen. Kupplung mit Wasser durchspülen; dazu nehme ich eine Spritze (ganz wichtiges Werkzeug, liegt immer an meinem Drucker). Die Kupplung war aber nicht das Problem. Aber ich hatte ja gleich den Schlauch im Verdacht gehabt. Beim Durchspülen des Schlauches mit Wasser und mit Hilfe der Spritze sammelten sich im Waschbecken sehr viele dunkle Stückchen: auskristallisierte Tinte.

Now keep calm and carry on systematically. First checked if the connection is plugged. Removed it with slippery fingers full of ink and braught it over to the next sink. Close the outlet! If it’s gone, it’s gone and you cant’s get it at any hardware store, you need to know somebody that knows somebody. Rinsed it with water using my most important tool: the shot (it’s always nearby the printer). Well, the connection wasn’t the problem. It must have been the tube. So I rinsed that one using the shot again and a lot of dark tiny bits were washed out: cristiallized ink.

Nun war ich so schön in Schwung, da nahm ich mir gleich noch die Druckköpfe und die Dumper vor. Das Druckbild hatte mir sowieso nicht gefallen, zu streifig. Dazu wird die Laufschiene abgeschraubt, damit man das Gehäuse anheben und die Druckköpfe mit Reinigungsflüssigkeit von unten säubern kann. Dann werden die Dumper vorsichtig aus der Halterung gezogen. Aber wirklich vorsichtig! Die Membran darf nicht verletzt werden, sonst läuft sofort die ganze Tinte aus und der Dumper ist kaputt. Jetzt brauche ich wieder meine Spritze. Damit drücke ich Reinigungs-flüssigkeit von oben durch die Druckköpfe und durchspüle so die einzelnen Düsen.

Sieht alles gut aus. Schläuche mit der Kupplung wieder verbinden, Schiene wieder anschrauben. Dumper einsetzen, Waschbecken putzen, Hände schrubben (ist aber hoffnungslos) und ein Testbild drucken. Oooch nö: er druckt immer noch streifig! Der Cyan Druckkopf hat vier verstopfte Düsen. Vielleicht hilft es ja, wenn ich nochmals Reinigungslösung durchlasse und alles über Nacht einweichen....

Now that I had found the drive I started checking print heads and dumpers. I had disliked the print image anyway, it was much too streaky. So I removed the guide rail for lifting the case and cleaning the print heads from underneath. Then I pulled the dumpers carefully. Carefully! If the membrane gets hurt, the ink drains and the dumper’s kaputt. Again there’s the shot, my favourite tool. I use it to squeeze cleaning solution through from above through the print heads to rinse them. Looks good. So I reconnect the tube with the connection, fix the guide rail, put back the dumpers, clean the sink, scrub my hands (which turns to be hopeless) and print a test image. Ohhh no: it’s still streaky! The cyan print head has four plugged nozzles. Maybe, if I let drain a bit more cleaning solution and let soak over night…
