Kaum zurück aus London, schon wieder weg: mit Freunden in die Berge.
I've hardly returned from London and off it goes again: to the mountains with some friends.
Das Skifahren ist mir im Laufe der Jahre irgendwie abhanden gekommen. Dafür liebe ich Schlitten fahren heiß und innig. Wenn man es richtig macht, ist es genau so anstrengend, gefährlich, sauschnell und am nächsten Tag schmerzhaft wie Ski fahren.
In the past years I somehow lost the lust for skiing. Instead I grew really fond of going sledging. Doing it the right way it's just as exhausting, dangerous, furious and painful the day after as skiing.
Ich empfehle wärmstens die beiden Schlittelbahnen zwischen Preda und Bergün im Graubünden. Die Anfahrt mit der Rätischen Bahn geht von Chur Richtung Engadin/ St. Moritz. Das Tal ist so wildromantisch, im Winter sieht man hellblau schimmernde Eisfälle rechts und links an den Felsen. Das Dorf Bergün ist hübsch, hübsch, hübsch.
My best recommendation is the slopes between Preda and Bergün in the Canton of Graubünden. Coming from Chur you drive towards Engadin/ St. Moritz with the Ratian Railway.The valley is breathtakingly romantic with ice falls shimmering in light blue on both sides.The village of Bergün is simply adorable.
Die vier bis sechs Kilometer (je nach Quelle ist die Bahn mal länger mal kürzer) lange Schlittelbahn zwischen Preda und Bergün ist im Grunde die Pass-Strasse, die von morgens 10 bis nachmittags um 17 und später ab 19 Uhr bis 22 Uhr (Nachtschlitteln!) für den Autoverkehr gesperrt ist. Sie ist recht familienfreundlich mit einigen flachen Stellen und nur wenigen fiesen Kurven im oberen Teil.
Für die Darluxer Piste braucht es die richtige Technik, damit man auf der Serpentinenstrecke durch den Wald nicht aus den vielen Spitzkehren fliegt. Ausserdem sind Hinterbacken aus Stahl von Vorteil. Die Bahn wird im Laufe des Tages immer buckliger, niemand weiss warum. Im unteren Teil kann man im Schuss dahinfliegen, durch ein Tunnel brausen und dann nochmal Gas geben, direkt auf den schanzenartigen Hügel zu, und dann: Autsch! Herrlich!
One of the slopes is appr. four to six kilometers long (couldn't find any reliable source) and is basically the mountain pass between Preda and Bergün. They close it for cars during daytime from 10 am to 5 pm and again from 7 pm to 10 pm (for going sledging by night, yes!). This slope is perfect for families with some flat parts and just a few mean curves at the very beginning.
The other slope of Darlux requires some technique if you want to avoid getting carried over the rims of the many serpentines leading through the woods. Besides some buttocks of steel are indeed helpful. For some reasons the slope developes a nasty uneveness during the day. The lower part invites you for a schuss that runs through a tunnel and leading directly towards a little jump, and then: ouch! Splendid!
Wir haben ausgesprochen reizend in der Pension Sonnenhof/ Preda gewohnt. Für freundliche fünundfünfzig Franken bekommt man in diesem malerischen Holzhaus, das direkt an der Schlittelpiste liegt, ein schmuckes Zimmer mit blizsauberem Etagenbad (inkl. Aussicht auf das verschneite Wäldchen durch's kleine Fenster) und Frühstück.
We found a lovely accomodation at the Pension Sonnenhof/ Preda. In this wooden house you get for some very fair fiftyfive Swiss Francs a neat room with a super clean shared bathroom on the same floor (incl. a view on the snowy landscape outside through little windows)and breakfast
Nur ein Hotel der Gegend ist noch toller: das fabelhafte Kurhaus in Bergün. Das einzig traurige an diesem liebevoll renovierten Jugendstilkasten: es ist immer, immer ausgebucht, wenn ich anrufe!
There's only one place better in the area: the fabulous Kurhaus of Bergün. The only sad thing about this beautifully renovated Art Deco house is: it is always, always fully booked whenever I call!
